This morning Alexis was my first client. She has a really beautiful head of hair to work with. She wanted something short with versatile bangs that she could wear forward. She was tired of her long bob. We poured over a stack of magazines and old photos before we both agreed on a short Sienna Miller inspired cut.
I cut out the shape and general layering while her hair was wet. After I dried it off I started to agressively attack the shape with my shears. This works well on Alexis since she has a very full head of hair. I used a few scissor techniques that work well with Asian hair to get some internal movement. The bangs were carved with a razor.
For her color I went with a cool blonde highlight through the top. The sides and back I left natural to give some variation to the texture.
Alexis thanks for trusting me with your new look.

Hello Portland!!
It seems that a few of my readers this week have come out from behind the computer and into my chair. This morning I had an opportunity to reshape some layers on a very nice flight attendant. She moved to Portland and found it difficult to find a good stylist. “It’s harder to find a hair stylist than a doctor”, she said. I agree Thanks for trusting me with your layers. I will see you back the salon in eight weeks. I was able to fix her problem because I simply asked the right questions. I asked her the most valuable question a stylist should ask every new client. What don’t you like about this cut, color, style, bang, highlight etc…..You can put the greatest cut in the world on someone, but it’s a waste of time if they don’t like it. The challenge is finding out what a perfect stranger is looking for, and then help them achive that vision.
This afternoon I had a client reschedule her service. That gave me a chance to catch up on a few things. I decided, like a jackass, to cut my own hair. It’s difficult to cut your own hair since everything in the mirror is backwards and in two dimensions. I didn’t let this stop me. What do you think of the cut??
I also caught up on a little reading today. This months “Elle” Magazine had a photo shoot that made me laugh a bit. It featured the skinny, hot, overdressed LA mom taking her little kid on errands. Since I just moved to Portland from LA this year, this shoot hit really close to home. Check her out standing in the playground sand in her $600 heals. The funny thing is these types of LA moms don’t take their kids to the park…..the nanny does.
I also saw an awful airbrushed ad from TRESemme. It was for a volume hair spray. The photo almost made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. Who wants hair like Miss America??? This is a bit too perfect. Hair that moves is sexy. This add says “please whatever you do, do not touch my hair!”
I also included a picture of my son Milo wearing giant sunglasses. It’s my gift to you.

Can you even wait to get your hands on the September issue of Allure? I think Allure has great articles on hair. They usually have really solid tips for working with your own hair. He are this months Allure hair highlights in condensed form. I just saved you $3.50.
1. The stunning beauty of Amanda Seyfried on the cover. She looks flawless. I really like the shattered texture of her face frame layers. Who ever cut this gets my endorsement.
2. Runway models styled by Orlando Pita. They have crazy big volume in the bangs for NY fashion week. You might be asking yourself how this applies to your own life. To be honest it doesn’t. For some reason designers are always looking for a reason to make a 6 foot tall woman even taller. With 6 inches of heals and 6 inches of hair. You now have a seven foot tall woman who has probably skipped lunch.
3. Chris McMillian is back talking about how Jennifer Aniston
likes no frills styles for awards season. He usually styles her with a defrizz product and then finishes with Bumble and Bumble surf spray on the ends. I personally like this coctail myself for finishing styles.

If you are married or in a serious relationship there is a good chance that you and your partner have a few “shows.” Maybe it’s Sunday night HBO, maybe it’s CSI reruns, maybe it’s Monday night football. What is it about “The Rachel Zoe Project” on Bravo that makes my wife and I crazy bananas for this dysfunctional group of celebrity stylists? It might have something to do with 80 pound Rachel in GIANT sunglasses, drinking huge coffees, wearing fur, and telling everyone to “shut up right now.” I swear when I watch each episode I feel like I’m seeing a Saturday Night Live skit. If you haven’t seen the show, maybe the following clip will give you an idea of what I’m talking about (FYI a 30 second commercial comes before the clip.) I am a huge fan of the retro bohemian Rachel Zoe hair style. She wears it well.
I also saw in the news today that Kate Gosslin went on “The View” with a curly version of her reverse female mullet hair style. Kate, I think it’s fine if you want to have fun with the curling iron. I think that it’s great that she tried to change her look, but Please, Please, I beg you, grow out the back of your hair so it no longer looks like the butt of a dog.

I am pleased to report that I am now back at Tribe Hair Studio working full time again. I have recovered from breaking both of my elbows. I can now do any and all hair services needed at the salon.
This week Bumble and Bumble sent an educator to Tribe Hair Studio to teach a styling class. We worked on looks from different eras, and a few new blow outs. Jenny and I tag teamed on the blonde with the pin curls. After we brushed out all the curls, we managed to get a nice retro pin up hair style. We stuck a flower in the side to add the finishing touch.
