I will be in California through the New Year enjoying 75 and sun. My apologies to those of you who have had difficulty getting in to see me in December. My schedule has been full. If you are planning on getting in for January, the sooner you schedule the better.

Bumble and Bumble Straight
Since the FDA crackdown on Brazilian Blowout” occurred, many with frizzy locks have been asking what is the alternative? This past month Bumble and Bumble has stepped up to answer. Enter their new ‘Straight’ line of products. The straight line consists of a new Shampoo, Conditioner, styling product, and in salon treatment. The treatment is a few hour service that is the Keratin alternative. This service smooths the hair and quiets frizz for 30 shampoos. The product is rinsed from the hair before leaving the salon, and the client can wash their hair in 24 hours. Bumble came to Tribe to teach a class on the products. I have used it and so far it’s a winner.
Last night I attended an Aveda presentation at the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. Beverly Hills stylist Geno Chapman presented his “Cocktail Collection” to about 40 select stylists. I went with Tribe’s newest stylist Kody Higgins. It was mostly editorial and high fashion fluff with not much practical to bring back to the salon. I had a good time, since Geno was an interesting showman. When I asked Geno what salon he worked at, he gave me the dismissive answer “two salons in Beverly Hills.” Maybe I should try telling people I work at “One Salon in Portland” and see how far that gets me.
Halloween Milo was a Monkey and Kaia was a banana.
I checked out the new Vidal Sassoon documentary out now on Netflix and DVD. Since then I have been taking my bobs to task.
If you ever find yourself around E. Burnside and 20th do your mouth a favor and check out Alder bakery. The dessert actually tastes better than it looks. Architecture for your mouth.

I got fat
I need you to try something for me. Stop working out. Stop riding your bike. Stop getting 8 hours of sleep. Spend your spare time taking care of a new baby and a three year old. When 10 PM starts you can get to work on a giganto bowl of ice cream. After about 8 months of that you will need to do what I did…..you get to go shopping for some fat shirts. I was at the GAP on a mission to move up a shirt size. The clerk looks at me and smiles. “New shirts for summer?” He asks. “No, I’m buying some fat clothes” I reply. I drove home and told my wife enough was enough. I am getting back on the bike. I started the bike commute again a month ago and I’m feeling great. I shed 5 pounds so far but I still have another dozen to go.
This morning I put a new cut on my client Fabiana. She hadn’t had a cut in about eight months. She came in and told me she “didn’t care about length, she just wanted something cool”. Cool is very subjective. When I first met her she walked in with three different hair colors and a tattoo on her back. I wasn’t going to give her some “Real Housewives” blowout and style. We ended up with a nice shattered layered style loaded up with Bumble and Bumble surf spray and Blow-dried only with my fingers. Her only request was she wanted a middle part.
Now that Dakota Fanning is all grown up Marc Jacobs decided it was time she got a penis.

Kate Bosworth recently stepped out with moss green ombré color. She looks like she should be juggling pins at a Hawthore Blvd food cart pod and riding a tall bike home with this disaster on her head.
Ask me if I know where to get a white modern bird feeder for your yard. Ask me if it looks like a hotel…..
The family and I went berry picking this summer. Milo ate the farm.

Let there be light
I recently read in the Oregonian that we had the second wettest Spring on record. It appears that the sun has poked through the clouds and brought with it a need to enjoy the outdoors. At Tribe Hair Studio we took the sun’s cue and installed a garage door opener on the glass wall in front of my station. This summer on nice days between 9am and around 2pm we have been opening the door and enjoying the breeze and sun.
At home, I have finally had a chance to enjoy my deck and patio and garden that I spent building over the wet season.
If you are anywhere near SW 10th and Adler and you have 6 bucks burning a hole in your pocket do check out “Nong’s Khao Man Gai” food cart. This cart serves only one dish. Poached chicken and rice with a wicked ginger sauce. The dish is simple upon viewing, but left my mouth singing in delight.
Be sure to check out the new Bumble and Bumble shine shampoo, conditioner, and spray. It works for all hair types and it has a yummy sunflower fragrance.

Élan Sassoon
A few weeks back I met Vidal Sassoon’s son Élan walked into Tribe Hair Studio and invited me to a class he was putting on in Portland. He is pushing his new product line called Sojourn and doing some cutting demonstrations. Unfortunately I had already made other plans so I couldn’t attend the cutting demo. I won’t put you to sleep with all the technical aspects of his new hair care line. After doing some research on the line it claims to be free of all bad ingredients (Alcohol, Sulfates, etc.) thus leaving you with a product left only with good stuff (Keratin, PH 5.0 etc.) Leaving you super duper happy you bought it. It seems that Sojourn haircare would like you to come to the following conclusion:
Sojourn = Good
Everything else on the market = Bad
I look forward to trying it out sometime in the future along with attending some future hair education that Élan is planning for Portland.
My Japanese inspired back yard project is moving along at a fever pitch as I near closer to Summer. I hope to be sipping cocktails in the back yard soon instead of digging ditches. I laid the patio for my outdoor room, built an entryway to my garden, and I’m now working on a horizontal cedar fence that will be the eventual home to a Japanese climbing moonlight vine. This weekend I hope to build a walkway and finish the fence.
My daughter Kaia has just learned to crawl at 5 1/2 months. A month away from his 3rd birthday Milo discovered the merits on hair gel. He now demands “wild hair” and insists on styling it himself. Any attempt I make to have Milo not look like he’s on “The Jersey Shore” is met with resistance.
In the ultimate hair color switcheroo Blake Lively went red and Emma Stone went blonde. Try not to crap your pants over this.
