Did someone hit the fast forward button on my life? Children grow so fast. My beautiful daughter Kaia has passed the 4 month mark. This past week she has learned to roll front to back and back to front. She has been using her hands to grab things and bring them to her mouth. She has also been smiling at me every chance she gets. She is going to have her Dad wrapped around her finger before too long. They say each child is different. Now that I have two, I can’t agree more.

Justin Beiber finally changed up that whole bangs attacking his face look. He says he was tired of it always in his eyes. The media has deemed it a “grown up” haircut. Personally I think that the only people who care how this guy wears his hair like are 12 year old girls. He did manage to auction off some of the hair to the tune of over 40 thousand dollars.

My winter landscaping ordeal continues. After finishing up the deck. I have decided to build an outdoor room. First step is excavating a large 150 sq/ft hole where I will lay the pavers for the patio. Doing this in Winter was probably not the best idea. I have been slinging wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of mud across my yard. When you have a full time job and two small children it’s hard to find the time to fit in projects like this. I hope that once the days get a bit longer and dryer I can do some work in the evening time. I have decided the floor will be large architectural 2′X2′ concrete paver stones with Mexican pebbles working between the stones. It will be modern and geometric.

I did manage to do my weekend course on bamboo fence building at the Portland Japanese gardens recently. The staff there were so great. We worked on constructing two different styles of Japanese fences. In order to do this you need to use this very abrasive black rope made from palm leaves. While working with the rope it leaves your skin black and sore. I was a bit concerned that this would hurt my hands. I need my hands to feed my children so I decided to use gloves during my weekend. I hope to start some fence construction by this summer.  Here is a photo of one of the fences my partner and I did at the garden.

On the fashion front:
The good: The New Tommy Hilfiger Ads are so sweet! I’m really not much for preppy fashion, but this ad campaign is great. Why can’t I pull of a blazer with board shorts??? This reminds me of the film The Royal Tennenbalms.

The Bad: The Tiffany Lock. Who The @&$? Cares. If you wake up with a burning urge to buy this over priced lock please call me so that I may talk some sense into you. Then maybe we can send that money to the people of Japan who could really use it right now.

Joe’s Jeans: just because models look good peeing into a sink, doesn’t mean we should shoot it.

See U at the salon

A Child is Born

Big changes in my life continue to unfold. My baby
daughter Kaia was born on November 14. I am pleased to report
that she enjoys sleeping through most of the night after only 3
months. I was not shocked to find out that she has very
little hair. If she is anything like my son Milo that will
continue to be the case for the next few years. I’m in
love.

I have attempted to
battle back the Portland rainy season blues by building a new deck
in my backyard this Winter. It is still a work in progress,
but at least I will have something to sit on come Spring.
This was my first time building a deck. I had a
bit of help from Youtube and the local Woodstock library.
Next comes the patio and next month I take a workshop with the
Portland Japanese Garden on building traditional Japanese bamboo
fences. As long as I can stay busy with my hands I’m a happy
man. My wife likes the fact that my hobbies usually involve making
things around us look a little better.

It seems that
lately every other client in my chair is talking about the new show
on IFC “Portlandia”. I caught an episode and found it good
for a few laughs. Check out the music video they did
Dream of
the 90\’s is alive in Portland.
I came across this ad
the other day for a medical assistant position. In it appears
that whoever designed this print ad decided two things up front.
1. Lets find a really attractive model to play the part of
the medical assistant 2. Let’s go ahead and give her the
worst possible haircut, so that no one trusts the doctor she works
for
The most recent
hair trend of the past month seems to be young women clipping in
bird feathers in their hair. One client told me about it. Two
days later another client walks in with three bird feather
extensions sticking out from under her hair. I asked her
where she got the feathers. She told me “a fishing
store”. She walked in the door of the fishing shop
wearing a long flowing skirt and tattoos on her arms. Before
she even speak a word, the person at the counter took one
look at her and said “The feathers are over there.”
Spring is close I
can feel it. Jeff D

Somehow I got a bit side tracked and I decided that it was okay to not update my blog for about 8 months.  Truth be told, I used to do much of my writing on my IPhone.  Since I can not get the new WordPress update until purchase the new model, I will have to do my writing the old fashioned way….on my laptop.  If you find yourself waking up in a cold sweat and wondering what has happened with me in 2010 here are some highlights:

1.   It’s official, I am now a Portland resident.  My wife and I purchased a home here in SE.  If you thought that the rain was going to send me back to California, you are mistaken.  I will suffer with the rest of you and become one with the darkness.  I will get ghostly white and talk about trips to Vegas and Arizona  sometime around February each year.IMG_1812

2. Our second child is due November 7th.  It’s a girl and we are planning on naming her………….  well we are still discussing our options.  Until she is born we are doing what you might call “nesting” which means that my wife cleans every surface of the house while I refinish all of the furniture and paint.  We are looking forward to meeting her.  For those who decide to book with me on or around November 7th,  I will be taking a week off after she is born.

3.   I have taken a bit of a break from my bicycle commuting this past summer.  Lately I have been driving to work since my commute is now 10 miles each way.  I have now embraced the following in no particular order: sunroof, Bose sound system, heated leather seats, not getting wet,  clothing that does not wick moisture and an additional 10 lbs of belly fat.

4.  Emma Watson of Harry Potter chopped off her hair last month.  Does she have the perfect features for this??  Yes she does.  It looks smashing on her.

5.  Milo continues to grow and amaze me with each passing day.  He now sleeps in a big bed and copies nearly everything I do and say.  He has an opinion on nearly every song that plays on the radio.

6.  If you haven’t yet tried Portland’s food cart scene you are missing out on some wonderful inventive cuisine at very reasonable prices.  It’s nice to see pods of carts spring up around the city in places that would normally be vacant lots.  My current favorite is Pyro Pizza on SE 12th and Hawthorne.  They make a delicious woodfired pizza for 8 bucks that rivals Ken’s Artisan.  When we ate there last week a woman asked my wife who is 7 1/2 months pregnant if she could bum a smoke.  In addition to good pizza you get lots of colorful Hawthorne characters.

7.  The show Glee rocks my world.

8.  As for hair…..I’m still doing lots of it Tues-Sat. at Tribe hair studio.  IMG_1616

See you soon.

An open letter to Seth Aaron Henderson

Dear Seth,

This week on Lifetime TV’s “Project Runway” you really turned it out. You smoked the competition in the mother/daughter challenge. Seth how is it you are pulling off this whole dirty rocker look and you are a father in your late 30′s? Maybe we should go out for a drink or something. You will probably want to have a straight up double shot of Jack Daniels rocks with a cigarette chaser. I will have maybe a micro brew. We could be best friends. We can discuss the merrits of neck tattoos, My Bloody Valentine records, overly zippered shirts, plaid and houndstooth prints, spiky hairstyles, black nail polish, parenthood and life as striaght men in the design world. Then after we are both good and toasted, you can teach me how to wear a bandanna around my neck and somehow make it look cool. Good luck with the rest of the season. I will be pulling for you as you design one Hot Topic inspired look after another. Hit me up for a haircut when you come through Portland. BFF – Jeff D

The creative process has taken hold on a few of my recent clients. First up is my client Kate. Kate is a bit camera shy so I was only allowed to snap a photo of her color. I respect your need for privacy Kate. She came in with 3 inches of ash regrowth and solid blonde in her midshaft and ends. “You can do anything you want” she said. It was her thrid time in my chair. I took liberties and gave her some soft ash lowlights and touched up the highlights. This was the finished color.

A few weeks back I also had a new client Mariah. She has a super hip style. She wanted some funky color. Here I worked some reds through the midshaft and ends. I also put a few dark blonde panels in the fringe to help show off the long bangs I had cut.

I managed to convice my son Milo to allow me to give him a full haircut this week.  I casually mentioned cutting his hair.  I then changed the subject.  ”GET SCISSORS” he demanded.   My wife held him on her lap and he happily smiled in the mirror and I cut his 20 month old head.   Hold still.

My biggest triumph this week comes courtesy of finacial GURU Dave Ramsey. I paid off the last credit card and I

used my

Scissors!

Tribe Raises $3000 for Trillium Family Services

This month an unusual colaboration occured between Tribe Hair Studio, Urban Gypsies Clothing, and Candy Ultalounge. The Tribe took the stage and rocked out some serious hair for the benifit which included: live hair demos, a Bumble and Bumble booth, a trunk show by Urban Gypsies, and lots and lots of coctails consumed during a live DJ set at Candy Lounge. I did hair hair some styling on the blonde in the photo below who later modeled Urban Gypsies latest looks.

On the fashion front, a few trends this spring are starting to emerge. First is Lady GaGa inspired sheer clothing and bra straps. Other trends that will continue are military inspired coats and gold metallics. UNLESS you are living here in Portland. In Portland the trend seems to be moisture wicking fleece snuggie body condoms paired with dominatrix boots and wet hair. I haven’t seen a woman show skin here in 4 months.

My ten week old Boston Terrier Tilly is starting to make herself at home now. She seems to have a love affair starting with one of my sphynx cats Mr. Kitty. Maybe they can keep each other warm.

Bravo’s “Sheer Genius” is starting up again for it’s new season. Please enjoy the drama of these stylist who are big on drama and not so big on talent. Maybe I’m just bitter after losing a spot on season one to stylist Paul Jean.
